Godan was published in 1936, one major works of Munshi Premchand. Godan, which means “the gift of a cow”, is a novel that takes you through a beautiful love-hate relationship. The story revolves around several characters representing various sections of the Indian community. The main character is Hari. Like many other poor farmers, Hari also wants to own a cow in the hope of elevating her socioeconomic stature to some higher altitude of self-reliance. In stark contrast to his circumstances, he bought a cow at a loan of 80 rupees.
However, when he tries to cheat his younger brother Heera with 10 rupees, things grow from his control. This harm leads to a big fight between Dhani (Hari’s wife) and Heera’s wife. Heera poisoned the cow and the police escaped to avoid being caught. To settle the case of Cow’s death, Hari takes some loan from a mystic and bribes the police. On the other hand, Gobar (Hari’s son) has a relationship with Jhunia, a widow.
When Jhunia is pregnant with her child, the villagers move to Gobar town to escape the wrath of the villagers. But then Zhuya is taken under the care of Hari and his family. Due to the issue of Jhunia, the gram panchayat ordered Hari to pay the fine amount for his son’s deeds.
Thus, Hari again takes a loan from the borrowers as the debt rises on his head, Hari saves his ancestral village from being auctioned by funds only by making a Rs. 200 deal with his daughter Rupa. Hari works beyond his capacity to stop work and eventually dies in the end.

Munshi Premchand was born on 31 July, 1880 in Lamhi four miles away from Varanasi (Banaras). His real name was Dhanpat Rai Srivastava. His mother’s name was Anandi Devi and her father’s name was Ajaib Rai. He was born in very poor family. When he was at 7, he lost his mother. Talented rich Munshi Premchand ji’s early education was completed in Lalpur Madras. His education started with reading Urdu, Persian. After passing the matriculation examination in 1898, he was appointed as a teacher in a local school. In 1910, he completed Inter and in 1919, B.A. After passing out, deputy sub-inspector of schools was appointed. He is famous for his world famous literature & story-books.
